S4W-Nepal is a non-profit research organization primarily focused on generating, managing and understanding hydro-meteorological, groundwater, environmental, earth science, and disaster-related data necessary to support wise water management decisions. S4W-Nepal exists to leverage the power of citizen science, mobile technology, and young researchers to improve lives by strengthening our understanding and management of water.

1. Research Associate

Job Description:

S4W-Nepal is seeking a highly motivated and interested individual to serve as a Research Associate. The Research Associate will work closely with the CEO and facilitators of the organization to achieve the organizational vision, mission, and core values. The Research Associate will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide input to S4W-Nepal’s research in water resources monitoring and management, hydrologic modeling, disaster risk management, and climate change assessment.
  • Develop research project proposals focusing on water resources management, hydrology, climate change, and related subjects.
  • Provide support in writing comprehensive reports, scientific papers, and project documentation, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to professional standards.
  • Manage S4W-Nepal’s social media platforms, including the S4W-Nepal website and build/maintain public relations through these platforms.
  • Prepare quality outreach materials such as presentation slides, news stories, CS stories, science stories, etc.
  • To conduct research from various primary and secondary data sources and disseminate findings through different platforms.
  • To support the S4W-Nepal team with fieldwork, data management, research, analysis, and report writing, and outreach activities.
  • To prepare meaningful and informative reports based on research results and present them to supervisors and other appropriate audiences.

Qualifications and Desired Qualities:

  • Master’s degree (or ongoing) in a relevant field (e.g., hydrology, hydrogeology, water resource management, environmental science, earth science, engineering, social science or other related fields)
  • Good background and interest in water resources management, hydrological modeling, and climate data analysis
  • Analytical and creative mindset.
  • Self-motivated and willing to learn and apply research concepts and skills.
  • Willingness to commit to S4W-Nepal’s vision, mission, and core values.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient and experience in using computer programming languages, especially Python and handling large datasets.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in GIS and Remote Sensing (preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Nepali
  • Have a two-wheeler and a valid driving license.

2. Logistics Assistant

Job Description

The logistics assistant is responsible to assist in the coordination and support of account works, logistics activities and fieldwork within the area of operation. S/he will perform a varied range of logistic and administrative tasks to deliver efficient and quality service and support to the S4W-Nepal team.

  • To support the Account and Admin officer for account-related work.
  • To provide logistical support to conduct regular office activities, fieldwork, and project-related visits.
  • To provide logistical support with the preparation and implementation of workshops, conferences, and seminars.
  • To maintain proper records of office equipment, vehicles, and documents.  
  • To perform equipment management, construction, installation, and maintenance of rain gauge, staff gauge etc.
  • To deliver and collect documents and other items.
  • To recruit, train and coordinate citizen scientists.
  • To perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor. 

Minimum Qualification and Desired Qualities:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or ongoing) in management or other related fields.
  • Experience in office support functions like filing, photocopying, binding, record keeping, etc.
  • Willingness to commit to S4W-Nepal’s vision, mission, and core values.
  • Willingness to do fieldwork in all watersheds of Kathmandu Valley at all times of the year.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must be competent in Microsoft Office Suite and Photoshop software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Nepali.
  • Have a two-wheeler and a valid driving license

3. Field Intern

Job Description

S4W-Nepal is seeking highly motivated and passionate part-time field interns (10 to 15 days a month) to conduct fieldwork within the Kathmandu Valley. The field intern will conduct the fieldwork in the surface water, groundwater, and other monitoring locations of the S4W-Nepal.

  • To conduct discharge monitoring of the Bagmati River and its tributaries.
  • To conduct groundwater level monitoring in the different locations of Kathmandu Valley.
  • To collect sediment water samples from different streams of the Kathmandu Valley.
  • To conduct field surveys of different pre-monsoon and post-monsoon campaigns of S4W-Nepal.
  • Recruit and train citizen scientists.
  • Update the status of monitoring locations to the supervisors.

Minimum Qualification and Desired Qualities:

  • Bachelor’s ongoing (I or II years) in science and or other related fields.
  • Willingness to do fieldwork in all watersheds of Kathmandu Valley at all times of the year.
  • Willingness to commit to S4W-Nepal’s vision, mission, and core values.
  • Must have a two-wheeler and a valid driving license.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to handle fieldwork in the worst-case scenario.
